manassas and around manassas national battlefield park. expect slow downs especially on route 29 and 234. police and shot and wounded a man in northwest washington. last night they found a man with a shotgun in the 5800 block of 13th street. he ran, dropping the weapon. then the man pulled out a handgun and pointed it toward the officers. that's when officers opened fire. the man is hospitalized in stable condition. we are following the latest developments in the nfl lockout which may be on the brink of ending. the team owners approved a new contract. they gave the players until tuesday to certify as a union and ratify the agreement. players say they will not vote until they review the deal. >> i think we all have an obligation to get a decision done because we are down where

welcome back, friday morning. millions of americans waking up to another day of blistering heat. extreme temperatures are putting the nation's power grid to the test. karen travers if it joins us from northwest washington with more on how people are coping with it. good morning. >> good morning. they are trying to cope with it

from the midwest to the east coast. people are seeking relief from the scorching temperatures. this is a massive heatwave that covers 1 million square miles of the united states. it looks like it's going to continue a few more days. nearly two dozen deaths have been blamed on the heat wave already. hospitals have seen four times as many heat-related illnesses than normal. there is little relief even when it's dark. when the sun goes down, nearly 100 cities have set a record for high temperatures overnight this month. as the temperatures are soaring so does power usage. people are cranking up their conditioners and fans. chicago has hit power grid records and new york is expected to be next. we will still been sweating a couple more days on the east coast. back to you.

weather every ten minutes. the region continues coping with record temperatures. and there's a code red air quality. adam caskey has the forecast. >> dangerously hot day. that's why we have the excessive heat warnings for this afternoon and tomorrow afternoon for the majority of the region. here's a live look at the naval academy this morning, or rather the view from the naval academy over the severn river. six humidity in the air. it feels like 93 degrees, along the water in annapolis when you factor in the humidity. this is like 95 in landover and in the district. on our way to about 102 this afternoon. it will feel like 118. very hot and muggy. code red air quality. slight chance of a late-day storm. slightly better chance in
